How To Install Steam In Ubuntu

In today’s tutorial I will be teaching you how to install steam while still using Ubuntu as your host operating system. This can mean a little less performance sometimes when playing Windows games in Linux however it shouldn’t be too much of a difference(I can play Portal 2 on a laptop running Ubuntu). The first step will be to install Wine. Wine is an emulator for Linux / Unix that allows you to run Windows programs. It has many options including which version of Windows to emulate and so forth. To install Wine run the following command in an open Terminal.

sudo apt-get install wine

If Wine installed correctly then when you run the Steam installer it should build some Wine config and start. Be sure to install the Microsoft Core Fonts to make everything display properly and also check the Wine Application Database before getting your hopes up, certain games still don’t perform as they should.

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Once these fonts are installed you can download the Windows installer from Steam and install as usual. Please note that some games will require some tweaking for better performance, you can check the official database to see how well an application or game will perform.
